Highlights vs Balayage: Which Is Right for You?
It is one of the questions we are asked most often at our Mayfair salon. Clients come in with a reference image - usually something they have seen on Instagram, Tiktok or Pinterest - and want to know: is this highlights or balayage? And more importantly, which one is right for my hair?
The honest answer is that there is no universal winner. Both techniques can produce beautiful results. The right choice depends on your hair, your lifestyle and the finish you are looking for.

The Fundamental Difference
Highlights use foils to create a more precise, controlled result. Our colourist sections the hair carefully, applies lightener and wraps each section in foil to process. This technique allows for consistent lift and brightness, especially close to the roots, giving a cleaner, more defined finish.
Balayage is a freer, more artistic approach. Lightener is painted by hand onto the surface of the hair, usually through the mid-lengths and ends, without foils or rigid sectioning. Because the placement is softer and less uniform, the result feels more natural and sun-kissed, with a seamless grow-out and no obvious regrowth line.
When Highlights Are the Better Choice
Highlights tend to suit you better when:
• You want significant overall brightness, particularly at the roots and through the canopy of the hair
• You prefer a more polished, defined result rather than a soft, blended effect
• You have fine hair that benefits from contrast and the impression of volume that highlights provide
• You want to blend grey hair with consistent, even coverage through the sections
• You are happy to come in every eight to ten weeks to keep the roots looking fresh

When Balayage Is the Better Choice
Balayage tends to suit you better when:
• You want a natural, lived-in finish - colour that looks as though it has always been there
• You prefer lower maintenance, with longer intervals between appointments - typically 12 to 16 weeks, sometimes longer
• You have medium to thick hair where the freehand technique can follow the natural movement of the hair
• You are on a darker base and want a gradual, flattering graduation of colour rather than a stark contrast
• You want a result that grows out gracefully without requiring constant touch-ups to maintain

What About Babylights?
Babylights are a form of highlight - very fine, closely-placed sections that produce a soft, luminous effect. They sit somewhere between the two in terms of finish: more defined than balayage, but finer and more natural-looking than traditional foil highlights. For clients who want dimension and brightness without anything too structured, babylights are often the answer.
The Most Important Factor: Your Base Colour
The starting point of your hair matters more than most clients realise. Significant lightening on a dark or previously coloured base - whatever the technique - needs to be managed carefully to avoid damage and to achieve a clean, warm-toned result. If you are making a substantial colour shift, we will always discuss a phased approach at your consultation rather than trying to achieve everything in a single appointment.
