Your Hair, Your Way: Rethinking Colour, Cut & Care Through Menopause

Menopause Awareness Month · Jo Hansford

Understanding Your Changing Hair

If your hair has started to feel a little different during perimenopause or menopause, you are certainly not alone. Perhaps it feels finer, drier or harder to style, or maybe your colour no longer feels quite like you.

Sometimes the changes are subtle. Your usual blow-dry might not last as long, a few more greys might appear, or the cut you have loved for years might suddenly feel less manageable. We know how personal these changes can feel.

At Jo Hansford, we believe you should still feel completely yourself when you look in the mirror. Our colourists and stylists are here to listen, understand what has changed and help you find what works for you now, whether that means a small adjustment or something entirely new.

THE CONSULTATION

Understanding what has changed

It starts with a conversation. We want to hear what you have noticed about your hair, what is bothering you, what you still love and what you might like to change.

No two women experience perimenopause or menopause in quite the same way. Your Jo Hansford colourist or stylist will take the time to look at your hair's texture, density and condition, and ask how it behaves at home, how you feel about your colour and how much time you enjoy spending on it.

And just as importantly, we want to know how you feel about your hair. That matters every bit as much as what we see in the mirror.

Perhaps you still love your usual colour and simply want it to feel softer. Perhaps you are ready to blend your greys instead of covering them. Or perhaps a change in texture has made you wonder whether a new cut might be just what you need.

We will talk through the possibilities together and create a plan that suits your hair, your lifestyle and, most importantly, you.

COLOUR

Working with grey, rather than simply covering it

Noticing more grey? You may love it, feel unsure about it or simply want a gentler way to manage your colour. All of those feelings are completely valid, and the choice is always yours.

You do not have to choose between covering every grey and growing it all out. Beautifully placed highlights, lowlights and softer tones can help your colour evolve gradually, in a way that still feels familiar.

If you are thinking about embracing your natural grey, we can help you plan the journey. There is no rush. We want you to feel confident with your colour at every stage.

CUT & TEXTURE

Working with the hair you have now

Texture can change considerably through menopause. Hair may feel finer, drier or more fragile, while some women notice more wave, curl or movement than they had previously.

A different approach to cutting and styling can make these changes much easier to manage.

Rather than working against a new texture, the right cut can use it to create shape, movement and the appearance of fullness. Small changes to length, layering or the way the hair is styled can sometimes make a significant difference.

Your stylist can also look at how you care for your hair between appointments and recommend products and techniques that suit its current condition.

HAIR HEALTH

When the change is more than texture

Changes in density and increased shedding can also occur around menopause, although there can be many reasons for hair loss and thinning.

Where a client is concerned about a noticeable change, it is important to look at the wider picture rather than assuming menopause is the only cause.

At Jo Hansford Mayfair, Medical Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner and Independent Prescriber Emma Wedgwood offers consultations for clients who would like to explore their hair and scalp concerns in more detail.

Following consultation, Emma may discuss treatment options including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) where appropriate.

PRP uses platelet-rich plasma taken from the client's own blood and introduced into targeted areas of the scalp. Suitability varies from person to person, which is why assessment comes before treatment.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT

Glowwa Meno

When your hair is changing, it is natural to wonder whether there is more you could be doing for it. Alongside your salon routine, nutrition can be one part of looking after your hair from within.

Glowwa Hair Food Meno is a daily supplement created for women before, during and after menopause. It combines vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to complement a balanced diet and support normal hair health.

Of course, a supplement is not the whole answer. If you are worried about sudden, significant or ongoing shedding, please speak to an appropriate healthcare professional so you can understand what might be behind it.

A CONSIDERED APPROACH

Your hair may change. Your approach can change with it.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to menopausal hair changes, and we would never want you to feel there should be.

Sometimes a few thoughtful changes to your cut make all the difference. Sometimes it is a softer colour, a different way of styling your natural texture or a new at-home routine. And if thinning or shedding is worrying you, we can help you explore whether specialist advice would be useful.

What matters to us is that you feel heard, supported and happy with the hair you have now.

We would love to welcome you in for a conversation about what is changing, what you would like to keep and what you might be ready to try.
