7 COMMON COLOUR MISTAKES TO AVOID

As the end of lockdown finally becomes a reality, many of you are now no doubt looking forward to your next salon visit (and we can’t wait to welcome you back). You could even be contemplating your next colour? Will you opt for a simple refresh? Are you keen to be rid of those pesky greys? Maybe now that Spring is in the air, it could be those summer hi-lights you’re after? Or, do you want to emerge with a whole new look?

Whatever you’re thinking colour-wise, it’s important to avoid making a few common mistakes.

So this month, we caught up with our very own ‘first lady of colour’, Jo Hansford MBE, to talk through the top things we should all think consider, to ensure we look after our beautiful new colour in the best way possible.

1. DON’T SUFFER WITH SULPHATES. Sulphates are the first enemy of coloured hair – they strips away colour, and will ruin your colourists hard work. Try our Jo Hansford Expert Colour Care range, which is free of sulphates and has a clever Anti-Fade Complex, meaning your colour will continue to look fabulous!

2. KEEP OUT OF THE SUN. Although there are many products that claim to protect hair from the sun, in reality the fail safe way to protect colour from the sun is to block it out completely. By wearing a hat and keeping out of the sun, you can block out harmful rays that could alter your hair’s colour.

3. DON’T OVER PROCESS YOUR HAIR. When colouring hair, be careful not to over process the ends as too much colour can eventually leave hair damaged and brittle.

4. DON’T RESIST PURPLE! Purple shampoos are a must for those with blonde tones, helping to neutralise brassiness which can occur over time. Try our Platinum Shampoo and Conditioner – the range is infused with essential oils to help nourish hair and neutralise warm tones.

5. DON’T CLING ONTO OLD COLOUR. One of the biggest mistakes clients make in consultations is to begin by saying ‘I had chocolate brown hair when I was 20’. As you age, your skin tone and texture change, and it’s important to work with your colourist to find your perfect shade for your current age, which is often lighter than the shade you once were.

6. DON’T MAKE A HAIR CHOICE AFTER A BIG LIFE CHANGE Before I begin colouring my clients’ hair, I always discuss their expectations and why they want a change. I will strongly advise against any drastic hair changes after any life change, and any reputable stylist or colourist should do the same.

7. DON’T FORGET YOUR RESEARCH! One of the biggest mistakes clients make in consultations is to begin by saying ‘I had chocolate brown hair when I was 20’.

As you age, your skin tone and texture change, and it’s important to work with your colourist to find your perfect shade for your current age, which is often lighter than the shade you once were.
